Public Transportation (ÖPNV)
The three federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, 24 districts and cities that are administered as independent districts and also 60 transportation companies are linked together in the integrated public transport system of VRN. The core of the transregional network is made of metropolitan area of Rhine-Neckar along with its main area centres of Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg and also Westpfalz (Western Palatinate) region along with its centres Kaiserslautern, Kusel, Pirmasens and Zweibrücken. This network covers an area of nearly 10,000 square kilometres (3861 square miles) and has about three million inhabitants.
Pursuant to partnership agreement VRN GmbH sets up traffic planning at conceptual level for ÖPNV local public transport within the network as for example layout of the suburban rail-network. It is also responsible for compilation of traffic analysis and projection and gathers information on the network's volume of traffic by counting and other forms of inquiry, cooperating with task managers of the integrated public transport system and also transport companies. Legal basis is provided by guidelines in relation to traffic policy on traffic infrastructure and servicing given by previous regulation.
Communal task managers are also presented with a framework for local traffic by VRN GmbH and they set up the guidelines by which VRN GmbH prepares a concept for a joint local traffic system along with future projections of its development. By order of communal task managers VRN GmbH on special agreement prepares drafts for local traffic and schedules and designs passage ways to link different means of transport.
At the same time VRN GmbH arranges for services offered by the networked traffic system and supports task managers in their jobs giving advice to them as to which services they can offer.
VRN GmbH is furthermore involved in working out tariff regulations for the networked system.
